Our goal

We provide psycho-social rehab, wellness/recovery action plans, group engagement, one-to-one interaction, structured independence, and activities.

James Bebeau, executive director of DPCS, said Harmony House provides day treatment for people who struggle in their daily lives with mood disorders, such as bipolar disorder, and psychotic disorders, including schizophrenia.

About 40 to 50 clients utilize the services daily for an average of five to six hours a day.

They take classes in a variety of subjects, including current events, budgeting money, health education and social skills; get job training and help finding a job; and use the gym and other facilities to relax and socialize.

Events

There are a broad range of Events and Activities involved with Community House. We raise a lot of our own funding through Community Sponsored events and Dynamic Business arrangements. These are very popular in the Community and often result in large crowds and standing-room-only attendance. We like to think that a large part of our success is due to having vigorous community investment.

History

EST. 1904 - NH

Community House, a South-Side Community Services rehabilitation program for adults with mental illnesses, is celebrating moving into its fourth and largest location since it came into existence 23 years ago.

At an open house Wednesday, James Bebeau, director of Behavioral Health Services at DPCS, said Harmony House provides day treatment for people who struggle in their daily lives with mood disorders, such as bipolar disorder, and psychotic disorders, including schizophrenia.

The building, once the cafeteria for the former Robert E. Lee Junior High School on Rison Street, took eight months to renovate and includes offices, the gym, a commercial kitchen and various socializing areas where clients can enjoy television, a game of pool and crafts.

There also is a computer lab where clients can practice skills they will need to enter the job market.

William Pritchett, chairman of the board of Danville-Pittsylvania Community Services and a Pittsylvania County supervisor, said the programs offered at Harmony House give its consumers tools for self-determination, empowerment and recovery.

Mayor Sherman Saunders became emotional as he told a story about the man who owns the property and leases it to the community services group —

Mobley said his company was formed specifically to provide low-cost, but good, facilities for DPCS. Besides Harmony House, DPCS leases apartments, an adult day care center and other properties from Bellevue.

Award Winning Peer Development

Our award winning Peer development program is centered around the promotion of our successful graduates and community engagement exempliaries. We are proud to honor successful achievement in the Peer Movement program by development into the Peer Associate track or via the Peer Intern track.

Peers who are enlisted in our Peer Development program receive professional supervision and attend state-certified courses through which they accrue credits towards occupational placement in one of our many Community Engagement Initiatives. We are the first in the Nation to develop such a program and other programs and CSBs are training with us to develop and augment their programs in the future.

A place to learn and grow together...

I entered the Navy right after high school and worked on a nuclear submarine. I had my first breakdown near the Philippines and was discharged. After I became a civilian, I got an associate degree and tried to start my own business. The pressure got to me and I relapsed again...

My membership at Community House has helped me to re-focus on what I want out of life and the staff there got me involved in the program for Business Start-ups.

Combining this knowledge and technological savvy and working with the Occupational Resource Specialist, I have been able to get my business up and going and currently have an online brand with authority presence.

I meet people and network in the community which makes me feel a part of something. Before that, I felt isolated and stuck on the sidelines. My success can be an example to you and I would tell anybody, “don’t give up, there is hope!”
